Trust is paramount between a doctor and patient.

Not every doctor will suit every patient and for some patients, the fertility journey can be long. Seeking a second opinion can be an important step for success, either to validate the decisions and treatments sought to date or to provide a fresh perspective on options that you can pursue moving forward.

When to seek a second opinion

It is not always necessary to get a second opinion. But if something doesn’t feel right to you with your current specialist or management plan, we welcome all requests for an expert second opinion.

A second opinion from a fertility specialist may be particularly valuable to you if you:

  • Have unanswered questions from your current treatment
  • Would like to pursue a different treatment plan that is being currently offered or just want to understand your other options
  • Have experienced multiple failed cycles
  • Are seeking reassurance regarding your current management plan

What to expect from a fertility treatment second opinion consultation

At your second opinion consultation, we will still review your medical history to date, perform a clinical examination, and suggest further investigations that may be of benefit. This appointment will likely differ from your initial consultation in that the majority of our consultation will review your previous care, discuss what information has been gained from these experiences, and answer any questions or concerns you may have.

It is important to send your medical records ahead of your consultation, including blood tests, imaging scans, and details about any previous treatment cycles. Additional time will be allocated to these review appointments to go through your previous treatment and determine an optimal management plan for you.

FAQs

What can I expect from a second opinion consultation?

This is a long consultation, designed so that we can review your documentation ahead of time. It is important to send any and all investigations from your previous doctor so we can understand the full picture. We will still take a detailed clinical history and may elect to examine you, then we can review the treatment that has been undertaken and suggest options moving forward.

If I see you for a second opinion consultation, do I have to have my care with you?

Absolutely not, sometimes a second opinion is an exercise in reassurance and a fresh perspective on your case to validate that the decisions and treatment you have done to date are the right ones. If at the end of the consultation, you are comfortable and happy with your initial doctor there is absolutely no obligation to change care providers.
